Jourdanton Elementary Counselor

by Missy Korus

August 22, 2010

I am a hometown girl.  I began school here in Jourdanton and graduated 12 years later.  After graduation, I attended South West Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where I received my Bachelors degree. I received my Masters in Guidance and Counseling from Texas A & M, Kingsville.  I began teaching kindergarten in the fall of 1987.  I taught kindergarten for ten years and then moved on to teach second grade for the next three years.  After taking a break to have our third child, I came back to teach fourth grade for the next eight years. My goal in education has always been to be able to help students who need more than educational help.  This is one of the reasons why I became a school counselor.  I not only work with students on an individual and group basis, but I also teach weekly character education classes to kindergarten through fifth grade.  Second Steps and Steps to Respect are two programs I use with the grade levels.  Second Steps is a violence prevention curriculum for grades K-2.  The lessons are broken into Empathy Training, Impulse Control, Problem Solving, and Anger Management.  Steps to Respect is a bully prevention program I use with the 3rd-5th graders. We discuss and view many issues pertaining to friendships, respect, and bully prevention.  In addition to these classes, I coordinate Red Ribbon Week for the elementary campus.  This is a fun learning experience for the entire campus.
